Gotham Mobile App

A companion mobile app for the Gotham Auto booking system, with passwordless sign-in and a personal garage that turns one-off jobs into an ongoing service relationship.

The challenge

The website solved booking. The app had to solve retention, which is a different problem: auto detailing is transactional by nature, and a customer who books a single tint job has no particular reason to return to a brand rather than whoever is cheapest next time.

A phone app also cannot borrow the website’s patience. Nobody keeps an app they have to fight to log into, and password friction alone will kill an app in this category.

What I built

Sign-in is passwordless. The customer enters an email or phone number and receives a one-time code — no password to create, forget or reset. For an app used a handful of times a year, a remembered password is a fiction, and removing it removes the single most common point of abandonment.

The retention answer is a personal garage. Customers add their vehicles by name and see service history against each one, so the app holds something the customer would lose by leaving. It also changes what the business can say: service becomes specific to a known vehicle rather than generic.

The service catalogue carries genuine depth rather than a name and a price. Interior detailing, for example, lays out its full six-step process, from the initial blowout through carpet shampooing, steam and foam-brush panel cleaning, leather conditioning, final wipe-down and streak-free glass — plus the preparation the customer is responsible for. Detailing is bought on trust in thoroughness, and itemising the work justifies the price before it is shown.

Outcome

The app converts a transactional booking into an ongoing relationship by holding the customer’s vehicles and history, while removing the login friction that kills low-frequency apps.
